Why do you need medical exams for life insurance?

I am an overweight woman but do not have any health issues. Why do I still need to have a physical for life insurance?
Physicals for life insurance are pretty standard, and they base their monthly fees on what the medical exam shows. This is why people who smoke, for example, or who are obese, tend to have higher premiums than those who live healthier lifestyles.
If you still are uncomfortable with the exam, there are policies that do not require a medical exam, although they tend to have a higher premium for a lower payout amount.
