Thinking of having a baby? Many women are surprised by just how much a baby can cost, especially when you start adding up all the expenses. Here are some things to consider and what you can do BEFORE you decide to get pregnant.
- Do you qualify for any coverage while on maternity leave?
- What expenses does your health insurance cover through your employer, making sure to check the delivery and prenatal care you could need. Some insurers cover some expenses but not others (such as an epidural) so be sure you know in advance, or if you can change the coverage well before you become pregnant (once you are pregnant it is usually too late).
- Cost of adding a new baby (or babies) to your medical plan.
- Start a special baby savings account just for baby-related expenses such as baby clothes, car seat, and nursery needs.
